Kim is a multi-disciplinary artist with many years of experience as a university lecturer in painting, drawing, and other artistic disciplines. She loves to share her knowledge and skills with others. She champions all kinds of creativity – nurturing individual, creative expression, in a relaxed, positive, fun environment.

PAINTING CLASSES (Acrylics) with Kim
Beginners are most welcome!
One can either paint your own picture with help from us, or you can participate in our fun, painting projects! It’s completely up to you. The last project we did was West Coast Wild Flowers in mixed media, and the results were amazing!
In 2024 we will be doing the Mock-A-Master (MaM) project which introduces students to various, famous artists (dead & alive) – to their painting styles, skills & techniques. Each participant will end up painting a set of small, square paintings with a common theme. For example, if you choose a lighthouse as your theme, all your MaM paintings will have lighthouses in them. We are planning approximately one Mock-A-Master per month, or we will proceed at the speed of the majority of the class. If you complete your MaM before the allotted time, you can continue painting anything you want, in class, until the next MaM is introduced, or improve on any of your MaM‘s you’ve already done. If by the end of our initial 9 famous MaM paintings, students want to continue with this project, we will. Then at the end of the year, students can then choose their favourite 9 to frame, or hang.
February = JIM DINE | Learning to work with basic, graphic shapes, layering colours & textures, and to also work with charcoal over acrylic paints to grubby up a painting to create more depth
March = MATISSE | Learning to ‘paint with scissors’ – taking shapes down to their lowest common denominator – also an exercise in exact colour mixing
April = VAN GOGH | Learning how to use short, sharp brushstrokes in an impasto style, with a variety of colours to mimic van Gogh’s impressionist technique
May = ROCK ART | Learning how to cut your own stencil – making sure you are aware of both the positive & negative shapes. Creating realistic stone textures with sponging and finger painting
June = RAOUL DUFY | Learning to use acrylic paints as a thin, watercolour-type medium, with very loose and expressive brushstroke outlines
July = PIET MONDRIAN | Learning about the ‘power of colour’: size and placement to create a completely balanced composition, and how to reduce down visual elements to only vertical and horizontal lines … and perhaps a right angle as well (just for fun!)
August = FRANZ KLINE | In this one-lesson MaM students will be learning ‘action painting’ – an abstract expressionist technique embraced by Kline. Instead of sitting and painting from the wrist, students will be standing, and painting from the shoulder, in big, bold, black brushstrokes.
August = GUSTAV KLIMT | In our 2nd Mam of the month, students will be learning how to create a simple composition, but decorate it with a variety of intricate patterns in yellows and golds.
Sept, Oct, Nov, etc = It’s always a surprise!

- This is a 3-hour painting event.
- No art experience necessary!
- Come and have some fun, exploring the weird and wonderful world of Abstract Expressionism. In a step-by-step approach, learn to loosen up, with big, bold and free, expressive brushstrokes!

- Price includes your own canvas board, and use of studio paints & tools.
